The Four Fields of Music

What is unfair for the word "music" is the amount of meanings the word is meant to convey. If you were trying to express that you were listening to music live, people would not know that if you simply used the phrase, "I'm listening to music." So to make it a bit easier, music was broken down into four different fields so a listener can know the difference

"In Heaven There Is No Beer" by The Foothills Oompah Band

I was at my towns local Oktoberfest when this song came on. A lady walked around and handed out sheets of paper and then the song began. It was obvious at that time and in this video that songs like this require participation from everyone. The paper had all the lyrics which made it clear that they wanted us to sing along with the band. An activity like Oktoberfest is an event that allows you to fraternize with people of similar age groups and through the these fun and easy songs, it is a great way to grow closer to whoever is singing along with you. Besides the fact that a band of instruments are up on stage, there is no really distinction between the performer and audient. At events like this people really love getting involved so being on the outside is not really an option. Participation is the only way for someone to have fun at a gathering like this. This is where you find social bonding at its' very core, everyone joins in on the song and feels even closer to the person next to them. You are expected to join in on the singing and dancing if you attend an Oktoberfest. The potential that lies within this form of participatory music is a great sense of belonging and brotherhood. But where it is limited is in its' inability to leave that moment. When the moment of singing, dancing, and playing instruments is over, the people who arrived go back to their lives with out profiting or taking anything from the experience besides the feelings they had.

An assortment of songs by The Gorillaz

The Gorillaz are by far one of my favorite bands. A concert like this really gives the crowd a glimpse of what really happens behind the scenes. That is why I think the crowd reacts so positively to what this group has to offer. When at a concert, the audience feel like they are a part of something that the band has made specifically for them. The potentials for something like a live performance is a much stronger relation between performer and audience. The limitations of this kind of performance is that when you hear a song like this, you will never hear another like it ever again.

"Excuses" by The Morning Benders

This is a great example of what I see as the high-fidelity music field. From what you can see in the video above, this is an exact index to what it would sound like if it were performed in a presentational format. This song has such a booming sound which really combats it's limitations of being a song in the high-fidelity field.  It's very lively and abstract to me. Music like this has potential of making the listener feel as if he is actually there listening to the artist perform in person. This is a trait of high-fidelity that makes the listener feel a false sense of realism through the recording. The limitations of high-fidelity music is that when you listen to it, you don't get any feelings of oneness with the performer or anyone else. The relationship is between you and pieces of data playing through your headphones or speakers.

You need a ladder (Zelda Theme) by Deadmau5

Deadmau5 is one of the most famous House music artists in the world. House music is a great example of the Studio Audio Art Music. Deadmau5 is known for his famous cartoon mouse head that he wears for every album cover. I feel this is a great symbol for what Studio Audio Art music is. It is no human interaction. It is multiple tracks and samples of different songs layered on top of each other, and then placed in a data bin for people to download and listen to. While you know that a human lies under the huge mask, you want to believe that this symbol of dehumanization is making these works of art just for you. The potential for Studio Audio Art Music for the future is that this kind of music draws the most talented artists in the world to work on this kind of music. The main limitation for Studio Audio Art Music is the lack of human interaction. There is no strengthening of any relationships.
